Telecom Digital launches Mango Network, a wireless data communication system by Mobitex from Ericsson

(18 October 2002, Hong Kong)Telecom Digital Holdings Limited announced today the launch of the Mango network, a wireless data communications network developed by Ericsson, the world's largest mobile systems supplier. Sky Networks Communication Group Company Limited, a network operator in Mainland China, would provide roaming services for Mango-supported mobile data communications devices in Mainland China.
Being one of the officiating guests, Mr. Tomas Lundkvist, Sales Director of Ericsson AB said, "Mango employs Mobitex network technology. Currently, Mobitex is being operated by over 30 operators in over 20 countries. Besides personal data communication service, Mobitex is very commonly used in various industries including transportation and logistics, banking and finance, public safety and emergency service, security and remote monitoring, plus many others. We are confident that the Mango network could provide the most accessible and highly reliable wireless data transmission service for Hong Kong subscribers." Mr. Alex Cheung, Managing Director of Telecom Digital Holdings Limited said, "The Mango network is flexible with open platform, which can cater to both consumer and industrial communications applications. The platform is proven to provide cost-effective solutions for different industries. Mango can customize and design a system that best suits our customers' requirements." "To herald the launch of the Mango network in Hong Kong, we launch the first two Mango-supported wireless data devices, Mango Tango and Palm Pad, for individuals. Sky Networks would provide roaming services for our Mango Tango users in Mainland China, initially in Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. We are now discussing with Sky Networks to provide roaming services in Guangdong Province. So far, the progress is positive and we expect an agreement to be reached soon."
The host of functions of Mango Tango include sending and receiving English / Chinese Emails, Instant Messaging, ICQ, Secretarial Paging Service, White Board, sending SMS and Facsimile, as well as Personal Information Management software and synchronization with Microsoft Outlook. A WAP portal wap.mango.cc has been specially developed for Mango network users, who can browse up-to-date information on news, weather, horse racing, soccer, stock prices, foreign exchange rates, traffic situation, entertainment and other news.
Mr. Cheung explained, "The Mango network is built on 'packet switching' technology, which has been proven to be most efficient for instantaneous data transfer. The Mango network is always on-line and no dial-up action is required for sending and receiving data."
